What we do and what it means to be a Freemason in Audley Lodge

Work

We hold Lodge meetings on every third Thursday of the month from October to April at Freemasons Hall, Church Street, Saffron Walden, Essex.

During these meetings we conduct our Masonic business in two parts.

The first aspect is to attend to matters arising within the lodge, much like any other business or club such as examining our financial affairs and dealing with communications from members and management.

Secondly is to conduct our ceremonies in the ancient tradition, which has changed very little in the last several hundred years, which include initiating new members, progressing members to higher degrees or the installation of a new master of the lodge.

Lodge meetings are followed by a meal we call the ‘Festive Board’, which gives our members a chance to unwind and get to know each other in a relaxed atmosphere.

Once a candidate is regularly initiated into Freemasonry, they are mentored and encouraged to progress through the various offices, carrying out pieces of work that will, in time, eventually lead them to becoming Master of the Lodge.

Education

From mid September to April, we hold a weekly Lodge of Instruction (LoI) on Monday evenings between 19:30 and 21:00hrs.

Our LoI sessions give us a chance to meet informally and go through the various pieces of ‘work’ that we perform at our meetings.

This not only gives us a chance to practice the individual pieces of work that go into our ceremonies but under the guidance of the more senior members, it allows us to better understand the context of the rituals and the symbolism held within them.

Attending LoI is not mandatory, however, most members who join aspire to reach the position of Master of the Lodge in due course and use this as a good opportunity to become well versed in our rituals and therefore confident in delivering a well-polished ceremony as a result.

Charity

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

- Sir Winston Churchill KG, Freemason 1874 - 1965

Charity can be seen at the core of every Masonic organisation. We believe that a man’s true wealth lies in the good that he can do in this world towards his fellow man and we strive to instil this virtue from the very beginning on our member’s Masonic journey.

The Masonic principle of relief can be often seen practised by our members in the form of charitable collections for good causes or carrying out fundraising initiatives when approached by both Masonic and non - Masonic organisations who are in need of assistance,.

Social

Burns Night Supper

The first of our “White Table” events of the year where we open up the doors to non – Masons to honour the life and works of the celebrated Poet and Freemason Robert Burns.

Our resident Bagpipers provide all the traditional entertainment, which goes a long way to ensure our guests enjoyment and see many return year after year.

Ladies Night

Once a year, usually at the end of the Masonic season, we host our second “White Table” event in honour of our Wives or partners. This event is always well supported by our members and gives us the opportunity to invite friends and family along to experience a part of what Masonry is about.
